With the profile drill, a large and virtually undisturbed sample can be taken to a depth of approximately 40 centimetres (10 centimetres wide and 5 centimetres across). Because the sample is virtually undisturbed, you can sample layers separately. All roots, up to a cross-section of 2 centimetres, are included in the sample.
It allows for simple determination of the volume/weight of various differing layers. You can quickly and accurately observe the quantity and distribution of root growth.
When sampling, the two U-shaped chutes are pushed into the ground alternately until the desired depth is reached, after which one side of the shaft is pulled up sharply and the other pushed down, thus clamping the profile. The profile sampler may now be extracted and opened to sample or describe the profile. Placing the sample back, to reduce the disturbance of the location to be researched to a minimum, can be done easily.
